The Chicon Collective and the Bearded Bastard

Rihanna’s “Diamonds,” swept around the corner and into the nook where I was plugging away, answering emails at the Chicon Collective, a coworking space in Austin, Texas. The brief (and welcomed) RiRi intermission was the only surprise in a steady afternoon of getting shit done and meeting the sundry collection of entrepreneurs, developers, and artists who flowed in and out of the building. That is, until I smelled something delightful coming from the loft floor.

Naturally, I decided to investigate, camera in tow.

“No photos,” demanded an unidentified voice as my head peeked around the corner. Inventor-style oval spectacles and a well-groomed mustache met my gaze. Jeremiah Newton – better known as the Bearded Bastard – was adamant about not photographing his production room. But he agreed to sit on the stoop outside with a cup of coffee to chat with me for a couple minutes about his line of men’s grooming products that was perfuming the shared office space.

“I’m a craftsman,” he said of his beard oils and other elixirs meant to tame unruly follicles. Yet, for an artisan happy with limited editions and working out of the upstairs of a coworking space, The Bearded Bastard has done quite well, appearing in the New York Times and GQ, among other top-tier publications. We’ll be checking it out for ourselves…
